A mutual commitment.
Ever had an impulse to get fit? Ever join a gym at the start of a year? Ever find that you stopped going because you lost your motivation? If you feel an initial impulse to exercise more you might exercise once, then maybe you won't exercise again until you feel the next impulse. But if you join a gym for a year and hire a personal trainer with a commitment for a certain number of training sessions, you're much more likely to follow through. You're goal of getting fit becomes more realistic because you've set up a support structure to augment your initial impulse.
Mentoring creates a similar support structure - for any goal that's important to you. Working with a mentor means making a commitment to yourself and working on your goals with daily motivation and inspiration.
Because we've set up an accountability relationship you're motivated to pursue your goals and achieve them. It's hard, in fact very hard to stay stuck in your old patterns and life habits when you're regularly encouraged to pay attention to what you really want, and when you make promises to a third party to do the required work.
What does mentoring provide?
This is different for each person. You may be looking for challenge, accountability, direction, inspiration, focus, a sounding board, support or validation. You may want someone to share your successes with. Or you may know that what you really need is a firm kick in the butt …. But the bottom line is, you’re after a specific result that makes a difference in your life. And above all – you want to have fun with it!
How to prepare yourself
Typically, it helps if you bring questions, goals, case studies, problems or situations to each session, so that you get to create your program in the way that works best for you. If you get stuck or aren’t sure what to discuss, I'll be happy to suggest several topids to explore. Sometimes those “I’m not sure what to talk about” sessions turn out to be the most creative and rewarding that we’ll have.
On the other hand, if I sense that you are not on track with your stated goals, or that your stated goals are not in line with your highest values and inner knowing, rest assured I’ll let you know!
Importance of feedback
I want very much to give you the coaching and support that you need. I am an excellent listener, a highly skilled mentor, and a pretty sensitive guy, but I have not yet mastered the art of reading minds (though I am working on it!)
The more you tell me about the value you are finding in the direction and content of our work together, the easier it will be for me to make the adjustments that you need. I welcome and encourage your feedback throughout our time together.
That's it. If you choose to go for it you may be on your way to building your ideal business and the life that you want, with the help of deep personal mentoring.
Thanks for listening,
